Meet the teacher |
Hello! I am Ms. Wells, and I am honored to be your child's first grade teacher! After creating the video about me, I realized that I forgot an important piece that you may be wondering about: my scarf. No, I am not ill in any way, I just don't have any hair. At the age of 19, I discovered and became diagnosed with Alopecia. Alopecia is an autoimmune disorder that causes your body's white blood cells to attack your hair follicles, rather than common germs. This then results in hair loss. So although I may be bald, I am perfectly fine.
I do talk to my students about this, and the best way for them to understand it is knowing that 'Ms. Wells is allergic to her hair'. I have worked with students while wearing scarves for years and actually use it as a teaching opportunity to show that we can persevere and overcome obstacles as well as to appreciate difference and embrace being unique.
If you ever have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!
Happy Learning!
